The Normal Hierarchy of Speech Sound Discrimination module is designed to help the child learn about basic properties of sound soon after receiving a cochlear implant or hearing aid. This section builds basic skills to help the child learn to discriminate and identify individual speech sounds in various word positions.
The following list summarizes the sequence of tasks (from easiest to most difficult) available in Normal Hierarchy module:
1. Suprasegmental distinctions (based on Learning to Listen to Sounds)
2. Words varying in the number of syllables and with different vowel and consonant content (e.g., square, circle, triangle)
3. Words with the same number of syllables and different vowel and consonant content (e.g. car-boat, plane-bus)
4.Words distinguished by manner differences in their initial consonants (e.g. shoe-two, fan-pan)
5. Words distinguished by manner differences in their final consonants (e.g. comb-coat, wash-walk)
6. Words distinguished by voicing differences in their final consonants (e.g. bag-back, rope-robe)
7. Words distinguished by voicing differences in their initial consonants (e.g. pig-big, D-tea)
8. Words distinguished by place of articulation differences in their initial consonants (e.g. tea-key, pole-toll)
9. Words distinguished by place of articulation differences in their final consonants (e.g. Pete-peak, bad-bag)
